Academic Ranking of World Universities
The Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) was first published in 2003 by the Center for World-Class Universities at Shanghai Jiao Tong University, China. Since 2009 the ARWU has been published annually and copyrighted by ShanghaiRanking Consultancy. ARWU uses six objective indicators to rank world universities, including the number of alumni and staff winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals, number of highly cited researchers selected by Clarivate, number of articles published in journals of Nature and Science, number of articles indexed in Science Citation Index - Expanded and Social Sciences Citation Index, and per capita performance of a university. More than 2000 universities are ranked by ARWU every year, and the best 1000 are published.

ShanghaiRanking began publishing the world university rankings by academic subjects in 2009. Building on this foundation, the Global Ranking of Academic Subjects (GRAS) was introduced in 2017 with an enhanced methodology. The 2024 edition of GRAS evaluates universities in 55 subjects across five broad fields: Natural Sciences, Engineering, Life Sciences, Medical Sciences, and Social Sciences. Among more than 5,000 universities worldwide, over 1,900 institutions from 96 countries and regions are presented.GRAS relies on a comprehensive set of objective academic indicators and independent third-party data to assess performance at the subject level. The evaluation spans five major dimensions: World-Class Faculty, World-Class Output, High-Quality Research, Research Impact, and International Collaboration. The index of international academic awards is based on Academic Excellence Survey (AES) conducted by ShanghaiRanking.
